From Class of 1960
Honors IRMA RISTY (1918-2005)
One of the most frequently-mentioned teachers at our 50th Reunion was Irma Risty. Mrs. Risty taught math at San Diego High School from 1955 to 1960. She was an engineer at Consolidated Aircraft during WWII. After the war, she joined the San Diego City Schools and taught mathematics at Kearney, San Diego, and Point Loma high schools, where she coached a long run of champion math teams.
Irma Risty is remembered as an excellent teacher, whose effective instruction enabled her students to develop reasoning skills that have benefited them throughout their lives. In honor of this remarkable teacher, an Irma Risty Scholarship has been established by several classmates as a gift from the San Diego High School Class of 1960. This $2000 annual award will go to an SDHS senior planning to pursue a career in mathematics or engineering at a 4-year college or university.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, any additional contributions to this scholarship fund will be matched. Checks should be made out to "San Diego High School Foundation, Inc." with "Irma Risty Scholarship Fund" written on the memo line and mailed to :

| About Chuck | Doreen and I met at Bible college 45 years ago, have raised 2 daughters and a son, enjoying 7 grandchildren, 3 granddaughters, 4 grandsons and 1 more onthe way in May. We have owned our own store for 38 years since 1974, a small independent office supply, office furniture store. We belong to the nations largest buyig group, giving us the opportunity to be extremely competitive. My son, part owner works in the store as designer/installer, my son-in-laws are engineers, one for Boeing 787, the other for Honeywell. We enjoy going to our beach house on some weekends on beautiful Whidbey Island since 1981. My career was sharing in church ministry for 18 years on completing college. Owning a store has been very rewarding as well, knowing that God, according to Proverbs 3:5&6, will direct your ways and paths if you only trust in Him and His Son as your savior. |
PROGRESS REPORT: THE REUNION DVD COMPLETED
The reunion DVD is now complete with production of about 200 + copies to be made commercially next week. As soon as the committee gets together to assemble them for mailing they should arrive within a few weeks. The completed DVD “ 50th reunion of the San Diego High School Class of 1960” has two parts. Part I, shown during the reception and dinner/dance with OBG music. Part II is a compilation of pictures contributed by classmates who attended the reception, dinner/dance and picnic October 22-24 in San Diego.

Hello everyone,
Just a quick update about post-reunion developments. First, you no doubt have received the letter from Richard Raines of Raines Video Productions. His video which consists of photos and interviews with reunion-goers at the Saturday night gala at the Bahia is available for purchase DIRECTLY FROM RAINES VIDEO.
The class video that Sonny Morper is compiling is under construction! It's a big task, thanks to all of you who sent Sonny photos from the reunion events. That video will be sent after the holidays to you who attended either the Friday night reception at the Bahia or the Saturday dinner-dance; you have paid for it with your payment for those two events.
If you attended only the picnic, and you want a class directory and/or a DVD, you can send a check to me (5009 Randlett Drive, La Mesa, CA 91942) for $10 for EACH item to cover production and mailing costs. We will mail everything shortly AFTER Christmas.
Sonny will keep the class web site updated as long as we are interested in having it: http://www.sdhs1960.org/. It will be the best source of current information about all things relating to our class of 1960. Washington School Reunion
Classmates from the 1950’s who attended Washington Elementary School met at Filippi’s Restaurant on India St. in Little Italy, Friday, October 22. In attendance during the luncheon was one of the former teachers, Mr. Macevicz. Plans for a larger reunion in two years were agreed upon and more information will be found here as plans are finalized.

Denny MacDonald Sends Greetings Following Recent Bike Ride Over Three Colorado Passes
Denny MacDonald on his way across three Colorado Rocky Mountain passes (Squaw, 11,140'; Loveland, 11,990'; Vail, 10,560') on one 120-mile day. The ride begins in Evergreen, CO and finishes in Avon, CO with over 10,000 feet of climbing along the way.

Carol shared this picture and reported: “We visited John & Penny exactly one year ago in New England. This picture was taken by a friend who was in our wedding in Columbia, Missouri (as was Penny ). After high school, Fred got an AA degree at City College and then join the Army Signal Corp. He served in Germany and Viet Nam. After the service, he traveled all over Europe for about a year. Fred worked for Pacific telephone and then moved to Bell Labs in NJ and worked as a programmer and a systems Analyst. He retired in 2002 and moved to eastern PA. Fred and his wife Jan have been married for over 43 years and enjoy travelling and their 4 grandchildren. Fred sent these greetings: “ Hi Folks, It is amazing that our 50th Reunion is here. Jim Boyd
Here is a picture of Jim Boyd completing his 300th marathon on June 14, 2009 after having completed his 299th marathon the day before. He notes that at one time he was disappointed to have lacked the athletic ability to make any of the teams in school sports, especially cross-country. Jim now sees that as having been a blessing in disguise. Never having lost an interest in physical fitness he took up jogging in his mid 20’s for health and to loose weight. Then taking up running in his 30’s he ran his first marathon at age 36. His 100th marathon was at age 55, 200th at 61 and 300th at age 67. Jim notes that this is in no way boasting, it is about giving thanks with eyes cast upwards, promoting fitness and best of all, mentoring others in return.
