Here are a few of the points that came up in our discussion: We are completely satisfied that the Bahia provided us with two wonderful venues and excellent cooperation/support during the events of our reunion weekend. The reception on Friday evening featured good food, a lovely sunset and a venue that was perfect for socializing. People appreciated the complimentary tickets for the Bahia Belle, too. The memorabilia tables were well-positioned both on Friday and Saturday evenings. Classmates & guests loved having the DVD photos running all evening at both events.

Our DJ Diane received kudos all around. It was impossible for everyone in the ballroom to hear and see the speakers who attempted to speak at the dinner! Willie's beautiful violin solo provided the only 5 minutes of complete silence and attention to the program! It served as a meditation and an introduction to the dinner and succeeding music and dancing. We've had good feedback about the buffet service and selections of food. The silent auction went smoothly, thanks to wonderful donations from generous classmates, and excellent preparation on the part of Beth and Katy. Our class of 1962 colleagues made the checking-in process as smooth as it could possibly have been. They were a godsend during the entire evening. [Many of us will be happy to work at their reunion two years from now!] Both the still photographer and the videographer seemed very busy throughout the evening. We have had inquiries about how to contact the photographer (Ginger will follow up with Cynthia). Jimmy Carter made his restaurant charge card service available at the silent auction and that process has been successful, thanks to Jimmy's follow-up. At 11:00 p.m. people were still sitting around the ballroom in the dark; a good party is one that people are reluctant to leave! The fireworks from Sea World added the final cool touch! The candy Mike and Linda McClure donated was great--lots of the remaining candy went with us to the picnic and from there to trick-or-treat baskets, I'm sure!

Those of us who attended the events at the high school on Saturday morning were impressed with the breakfast program in the media center and the Wall of Honor celebration in the theater. [Ada Jean Johnson Edwards' son Todd came from Houston to receive the award for his mother. Carol and Ada spoke about the reunion and Ada's award on Ada's live radio show at 6:00 a.m. that morning, too!]

The picnic was great fun and very casual. Jimmy's food was fabulous, and the venue was perfect. We sold a lot of t-shirts which were visible in abundance at the picnic.

The financial report is incomplete, but all the major bills have been paid: the Bahia, class directory production, florist, picnic, tee shirt production, copying. Some payments for the dinner-dance are still outstanding; we need to remind people with phone calls that they haven't sent their checks! When all the bills have been paid, we will issue a final financial report.

Post-reunion expenses will include the production of the class DVD and postage for sending it and the directories. Susan will research postage costs for mailing these items. She plans to organize a mailing party with her North County committee when the DVD is ready to send. We have heard that at least two classmates sent bio material for the directory that did not appear in the directory. We will try to track down the lost material, and add the bios to the corrections on the web site: Carol, Jack, Sonny will follow up. Carol will send an e-mail asking people to send corrections that can be posted.

Tee-shirt sales: we currently have 6 large t-shirts and 29 XL shirts remaining. If interest is high, we can produce more t-shirts to sell. Carol will send e-mail telling classmates that t-shirts are available if they want to order them.

Scholarship Fund: We have more than $4,000 in the scholarship fund, thanks to proceeds from the silent auction and subsequent contributions to the fund. We discussed how we would like to award these monies. A subcommittee of Beth & Ed Ott, Jack Dawes, and Susan Glanz will work with Daryl Ferguson of the SDHS Foundation to award our student grants/scholarships. The general feeling of the larger committee was that we would like to award one-time grants to students who will be attending community colleges after graduating from San Diego High. One of our classmates, Jo Anne Lewis Kelch, and her husband David, are starting another scholarship fund in honor of SDHS math teacher Irma Risty (Mrs. Risty died two years ago). This scholarship fund will be ongoing/permanent and it will be attributed to the Class of 1960, i.e. "the Class of 1960's Irma Risty Scholarship Fund." We will have information about how to contribute to it as the information becomes available. [It is possible that a portion of the money we raised at the reunion can be contributed to the Irma Risty fund.]

We had a great meeting, and then we ate sandwiches and baked treats (compliments of Katy) and continued to chat about how much fun we have had as a committee and how happy we are that the reunion was such a success. We will continue to find reasons to schedule "meetings"! Keep tuned: we have assigned some other folks to come up with plans for a Class of 1960 70th birthday celebration in 2012!! (You don't have to turn 70 in 2012 to come to the party, of course!)

THANK YOU ALL,

Carol Perkins, note taker

Silent Auction Items Prepared

San Diego High School Class of ’60 Reunion
Silent Auction Items (update 10/17)

New York Nights Out in the Big Apple (two offers) donated by Joe O’Neal
(Joe and Carol would be glad to guide you or give you tips on enjoying your stay in the Big Apple.)
Package #1 Value $800
$200 in Delta Airlines vouchers for air travel
Wine tasting at the Michelin starred Monday Room ($100 gift cert.)
Dinner for 2, including wine at Public, in the Bowery, (walking distance from the hotel)
One night stay at the stunning Cooper Square Hotel (min. room price $339)
Or,
Package #2 Value $800
$200 in Delta Airlines vouchers for air travel
Cocktails/wine tasting at the Monday Room ($100 gift certificate)
Dinner at the Double Crown/Madame Genevas (walk off dinner in the historic Bowery)
One night stay at the stunning Cooper Square Hotel (min. room price $339)

2. One week stay in Maui donated by Laf and Bev Abrams Young
The Young’s charming guest house is fully outfitted for your comfort and convenience, including kitchen facilities. We have a few loose ends to work out during the week, but I think we're set for the big weekend! First of all, Jeanette asked if we have a contingency plan in case of rain on Sunday when we'll be having our picnic in Balboa Park. No, of course we don't! It CAN'T keep raining after this weekend!

Those in attendance:
Ginger & Dave Garrett
Katy Lux
Beth Ott
Willie Horton
Jeanette Dutton
Thomas Meshack
Susan Glanz
Norma Wetzel
Liz Green
Diane George
Marci Paraiso Heider [class of '62]
Jimmy Carter
Bill Cadwallader
Jack Dawes
Carol Perkins
[No Sonny Morper, so, alas, no photos to accompany these notes!]

Reports:
Finances: In spite of the unexpected 21% service charge that was required of us and which we had to pay with our final payment to the Bahia by October 15, we will have just enough left in the treasury to pay the remaining bills: production of the directory, the picnic, t-shirt production, decorations for the Bahia, DVD production & distribution. With good t-shirt sales, we should end up with a small balance in the treasury.

Hotel rooms at the Bahia have sold out for Saturday night. Point of information: the Catamaran is owned and operated by the same people & there is shuttle service between the two hotels. The Bahia has provided 100 coupons for use by our reunion goers to ride on the Bahia Belle either evening. Guests of the hotel always have free passage on the boat ride. The last boat leaves at 10:30 p.m. each night. We have 230 confirmed/paid for dinner reservations; seating for 240 will be set up.

Silent auction:SCHOLARSHIP FUNDRAISER: Beth and Katy have collected and constructed 22 very nice baskets for the silent auction. Beth explained the procedure that we'll follow. All bids must be written on the sheets provided with the items; the bidding will close at 9:00 and people who "win" the baskets can pay for them at that point. An e-mail will be sent out this week describing all the auction baskets; if people are not attending the Saturday event, they can make written bids and submit them in sealed envelopes before Saturday night; if their bids win an item, we will get the basket to them COD! [Beth & Katy would like a couple more things to complete some of the baskets: one would be a coupon for yarn or knitting lessons from a local knitting shop; another would be small Hawaiian items to accompany the guest cottage in Maui offering. Call Beth: 619-670-0694 if you can help.] The class of '62 crew will be asked to receive payment from the auction winners at the end of the auction. One other request: We want one or two people to keep an eye on the auction tables during the 6:00-9:00 time period. If you would be willing to spend a half hour shift doing that, please let Beth know.

Name tags: Susan and Norma convened a committee of 5 (Margaret Faris, Roxanne Smith, Anita Worden) and produced fabulously cool name tags. We have very nice customized stick-on name tags for guests of classmates whose names are not known to us at this point.
Name tags will be available at the registration tables Friday [Jeanette and Donna Couchman in charge; they can use more help] and Saturday night [Marci Heider's crew]. The class t-shirts will be sold both nights at registration: $10.00 each. People will pick up their name tags and be checked off the master list provided by Beth.

Sonny's report on the production of the class DVD: Carol reported on Sonny's behalf: the final production of his DVD will happen after Thanksgiving. We will encourage classmates to continue contributing pictures, including ones they take at the reunion. ALL PHOTOS MUST BE SENT TO SONNY VIA E-MAIL for this final production phase [i.e., people will have to convert their film photos to digital format]. We will have a post-reunion working session to address and mail the finished product in mid-December. [Note: Combined cost for DVD and Directory will be $15.00 for people who order them post-reunion.] REMEMBER: We also have a professional videographer who will be taking videos and interviewing classmates throughout the Saturday evening festivities. These videos will be available from him, Richard Raines, of Raines Video Productions.

The class directory: Jack brought the finished products and they are great! John Dawes was in contact with Jack, Sonny, Susan and Carol all during the previous week as he put the cover design and finished product together. We went over our estimated $1,000 cost on them (because we had such good response to our call for biographical sketches!!).

High School Celebration on Saturday morning, October 23: We encourage attendance at the events at San Diego High starting with a continental breakfast in the library-media center at 8:30 a.m. Our class is being honored. At 10:15 the Wall of Honor celebration will be held in the Lois Perkins Theater. Our classmate Ada Jean Johnson Edwards is being honored.

Picnic on Sunday, October 24 [which will be a bright, shiny San Diego fall day]: Carol bought the soft drinks & bottled water & we'll store it at the Redwood Bridge Club until Sunday; we've asked for volunteers to bring coolers & ice before the 12:00 noon start of the picnic. Jimmy will arrive at 11:00 to set up [I'm sure he'll appreciate help]. We'll encourage people to bring lawn chairs; there will be some tables set up inside, but not enough seating for 150. Liz Green will bring the cake.
Let's enjoy our party!!

Carol Perkins, note taker
10/17/10

The Golden Reunion planning committee met on Saturday, September 18. Carol is searching for Jim Gauntlett, our class advisor, but no luck so far. Shirley Hayes Kovac has been invited (sponsor of Seargenettes and now Alumni Association president). We hope Ed Ott will officially represent the SDHS Foundation.
Below: Baseball Coach Jerry Dahms (SDHS Class of 1947) with Class of 1960 Caver and Baseball team first baseman, Jim Thompson and Sonny Morper with Coach Hank Weigand.

Silent auction contributions: Beth and Katy Lux are collecting donations and coordinating theme baskets, etc. Some fabulous donations have been received. Photos from the reunion will be added. The DVDs will be burned by an outfit in Kearney Mesa and mailed to everyone. PLEASE NOTE: the professional DVD producer, D. Haines, will be at the Bahia on Saturday. His DVD is a very different product than Sonny's and he will send out order sheets after the reunion for people to purchase that DVD directly through him. A professional still photographer will be at the Bahia Friday & Saturday. Same deal: orders can be placed & photos will be sent out after the reunion. Ginger is the contact person.

T-Shirts: Jimmy has a company that makes shirts for his business; he'll order the shirts for us.

STILL PENDING:
MEMORABILIA: We need someone to set up a couple of tables with memorabilia.
AV EQUIPMENT for the slide show: We need a screen, projector capable of hooking up to a lap top computer. Two sets if we can get them-- for both nights--one for showing the "History of San Diego High" and the other for our slide show; both will repeat showings throughout the nights we are there.
FINALIZATION of scholarship fundraising activities: opportunity drawings, silent auction.
