70th Birthday Party Date Set For September 15, 2012
Jack Dawes has been the executive officer: he has researched the officer's clubs and related facilities in San Diego and we have booked Saturday, September 15, at the North Island Naval Air Station's "19th Hole." It's a beautiful facility in an equally beautiful setting. We are set for a buffet dinner that will cost about $35.00 per person (cash bar will be available).
We will have access to the restaurant's patio with chairs, tables & umbrellas. There is golf course all around the building with a driving range for the Tiger Woods hopefuls (there may be putting greens, too).
The Golf Pro Shop is next door to 19th Hole. Golf can only be played during weekdays. So we can book Friday, September 14, for our golfers. Tee times start at sunrise. Golf Carts available. Extras can be rented for following the golfers. We can setup a tournament, if we there is interest in doing that. There is a Refreshment Cart available for a great cool drink.
For those who are eligible--retired and active duty service personnel, and DOD employees-- there is a Navy Lodge, brand new in 2011, with awesome facilities.
This web site has links to all the North Island and other San Diego facilities: http://mwrtoday.com/sandiego/
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO NOW? Make a commitment to come to San Diego for this mini-reunion. We will confirm prices and send out details about driving onto the Naval Air Station soon. For now, we would like to get your feedback so we can have a realistic idea of our expected turn-out. You can reply to this e-mail or leave a message on our new Class of 1960 Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SanDiegoHighSchoolClassOf1960. Our class web site is full of great information, too:

[The San Diego High School Alumni Association's Facebook web site is at: https://www.facebook.com/SDHSCavemen. Remember to join the Alumni Association--no one EVER bugs you for donations or contributions of any kind. The twice-a-year newsletter is well worth the annual membership fee of $15.00!]
Please ask other classmates whose e-mail addresses and/or other contact information is missing from our files to contact me.
On behalf of the planning committee, I send our best wishes.
cheers,

"Hi" From Colorado

Hi everyone!
Please note my email address has changed from last year's directory: noalani@skybeam.com is correct.
We got back from last year's reunion just in time for me to sing in a special November concert at the Montrose Pavilion (quite a nice setup for a town our size – auditorium seats over 600 people). We are now in rehearsal for our second annual Montrose Arts Council Festival Chorus performance. Thanks to the director of last year's event, I ended up on an email list which eventually got me into the ensemble (and one line) in a local production of "South Pacific" – hence the photograph. Rehearsals began in February and we gave 11 performances in May and June – lots of work and lots of fun. Oh, the backdrop in the nurse photo is based on a tapa (bark) cloth my father brought back from American Samoa in 1939.
I finished my index for The Green Medicine Chest I was working on in San Diego, and have indexed books on a far-ranging variety of topics this year including The Economics of Climate Change in China, The Fungal Pharmacy (medicinal mushrooms and lichens) and Dionysius the Areopagite between Orthodoxy and Heresy (neoplatonism in early Christianity). As a result of a conversation with one of the pianists for "South Pacific," I also had a paid gig in July accompanying the Missoula Children's Theater one week in Ouray (40 miles from here); this had an added advantage of taking me closer to the mountains during a very hot week down here in the valley.
Darrell (and I) have made substantial progress on our new deck and hope to have it pretty much finished by the time snow flies in Montrose. The mountains are already covered in white. We are also working on growing more of our own food. Our two cats continue to entertain us.
Finally, I am tying up loose ends to turn over my duties as secretary as I leave the board of Western Colorado Congress, on which I have served for 6 years following 3 years as president of our local affiliate, the Uncompahgre Valley Association. Last Saturday, October 8, I received the Chuck & Betsy Worley Award for "inspirational leadership and dedicated participation in efforts to protect Western Colorado's communities and environment."

2011 Irma Risty Scholarship News from Jo Ann Kelch
Six Irma Risty Scholarship applications were received from 2011 graduating seniors. Of those, only one met the criteria of the award. That applicant was the fortunate recipient of a Gates Millennium Scholarship, which provides full tuition for the duration of the student’s college studies, including graduate school. Therefore, the Irma Risty Scholarship was not awarded in 2011. We anticipate more qualified applicants in future years.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, all contributions to the Irma Risty Scholarship Fund will be matched throughout 2011. As of September, the Fund has received $3000 in additional contributions. Checks should be made out to the San Diego High School Foundation, Inc. with "Irma Risty Scholarship Fund" written on the memo line and mailed to:
Daryl Ferguson, Scholarship Co-Chair

Greetings From Alaska: Betty Ann Bolt
We have had a continuing good time since the big gathering. In September 2010 my husband, Ken Chang, celebrated a significant birthday with a Mediterranean cruise. We, of course, had a wonderful time. Ken's passionate hobby of photography continues to provide us with wonderful visual memories.

I am spending even more time with my quilting. Family weddings offer great opportunities for quilting gifts. Ken's niece was the recipient of a double wedding ring at her wedding in Honolulu. (quilt.jpg) The bride is in the left rear. What a wonderful place for a wedding and family reunion. Ken's family live in Hawaii, Honolulu and Molokai.

With Xmas coming up, I am providing Ken with a big hint. My top of the list is a tractor! At every visit to Lowe's, I try them on for size. I think living in Alaska warrants a tractor. I point out each winter that my tractor would save him a lot of work shoveling out the house. So far, no go. But I keep hoping.
We have such wonderful memories of the 50th reunion. We both hope all are keeping healthy and active.

SDHS Scholarship
From Class of 1960
Honors IRMA RISTY (1918-2005)
One of the most frequently-mentioned teachers at our 50th Reunion was Irma Risty. Mrs. Risty taught math at San Diego High School from 1955 to 1960. She was an engineer at Consolidated Aircraft during WWII. After the war, she joined the San Diego City Schools and taught mathematics at Kearney, San Diego, and Point Loma high schools, where she coached a long run of champion math teams.
Irma Risty is remembered as an excellent teacher, whose effective instruction enabled her students to develop reasoning skills that have benefited them throughout their lives. In honor of this remarkable teacher, an Irma Risty Scholarship has been established by several classmates as a gift from the San Diego High School Class of 1960. This $2000 annual award will go to an SDHS senior planning to pursue a career in mathematics or engineering at a 4-year college or university.
Through the generosity of an anonymous donor, any additional contributions to this scholarship fund will be matched. Checks should be made out to "San Diego High School Foundation, Inc." with "Irma Risty Scholarship Fund" written on the memo line and mailed to :

Addendums/Revisions To Class of 1960 Directory
Our first addendum comes form Chuck Lauby. He suggested we use his Facebook posting as follows:
Basic Information
| About Chuck | Doreen and I met at Bible college 45 years ago, have raised 2 daughters and a son, enjoying 7 grandchildren, 3 granddaughters, 4 grandsons and 1 more onthe way in May. We have owned our own store for 38 years since 1974, a small independent office supply, office furniture store. We belong to the nations largest buyig group, giving us the opportunity to be extremely competitive. My son, part owner works in the store as designer/installer, my son-in-laws are engineers, one for Boeing 787, the other for Honeywell. We enjoy going to our beach house on some weekends on beautiful Whidbey Island since 1981. My career was sharing in church ministry for 18 years on completing college. Owning a store has been very rewarding as well, knowing that God, according to Proverbs 3:5&6, will direct your ways and paths if you only trust in Him and His Son as your savior. |
